Description

This herb has a long history of helping women manage healthy hormone levels. Native to Greece and Italy in the Mediterranean, chaste tree, also known as Vitex or chaste tree berry, is especially helpful to cycling women (before hitting perimenopause or menopause). It encourages the pituitary hormone LH to properly signal the ovaries in their production of progesterone. This works through a dopamine pathway, which also results in positive brain effects. As a result, it improves both progesterone and dopamine levels, which has a noticeable, positive effect on women of all ages and their outlook on life.

For centuries, chaste tree berries have supported women’s hormonal health and their menstrual cycles. In recent years, studies have been done to put these claims to the test.

In a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, 162 female patients (ages 18-45) were randomly chosen to take either a placebo or various doses of a chaste tree berry product (featuring 8, 20, or 30 mg) over three menstrual cycles. Each woman assessed the severity of their symptoms on a scale. The symptoms monitored were levels of irritability, anger, other mood alterations, headaches, bloating, and breast fullness. The results were encouraging. The chaste tree berry was well tolerated by the women and the higher the dose, the more help each woman received from their PMS symptoms. Those taking 20 mg or higher had significantly better results in symptom alleviation than those in the placebo or 8 mg treatment groups.

Another randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study involved 134 patients who were asked to complete a self-assessment. The questionnaire asked the patients about their mood and uncomfortable hormonal symptoms. The patients were asked to take 40 drops of Vitex extract or the matching placebo for 6 days before menses for 6 consecutive cycles. The study found those taking chaste berry significantly improved their symptoms, compared to the placebo.

Chaste tree berry is featured in both NutriRestore’s Cycle Balance and Menopause Balance products.

Why we love chaste tree, happiness for women

I (Dr. Warren) call this “happiness for women” because of how well it can improve PMS symptoms and hormone dysregulation. This herb is most famous for helping progesterone levels. Low progesterone levels are directly tied to harsh PMS symptoms, mood disorders, and ovulation issues. Thanks to chaste tree berry’s ability to improve progesterone levels, this can improve feelings of depression and anxiety caused by low progesterone levels.

Chaste tree berry is beneficial for many brain and mood-related issues that are directly tied to menstrual cycles and can take the edge off the severity of PMS. Its positive effects on the brain are due to its ability to direct the communication between luteinizing hormone (LH) and the ovaries. It affects the dopaminergic signal, and dopamine is the “happy chemical” that is part of our reward system. When we have patients who are having brain, nerve and hormone issues, this can help with their neurological and hormone interactions.

Thanks to chaste tree berry’s incredibly positive effects on dopamine and progesterone levels, along with its ability to help stabilize mood and promote healthy ovulation and hormone cycles, we love using it in the clinic with our female patients.

Please note that this lowers prolactin levels, so if you are pregnant or nursing, be aware that it will lower milk production. This can be helpful for nursing mothers whose milk supply is too forcefully abundant.
